Pikeville, Kentucky – Snow showers sweeping across the mountains of eastern Kentucky could quickly coat roads and cut visibility during heavier bursts, creating hazardous travel through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Harlan, Floyd, Knott, Perry, Letcher, Martin and Pike counties until 7 p.m. EST. Additional snowfall of a half inch to 2 inches is expected, with locally higher totals where bands persist. Elevations above 3,000 feet could see up to 4 inches. Wind gusts may reach 30 mph in heavier snow showers, leading to sudden drops in visibility.

Across northeast and southeast Kentucky, road conditions will vary sharply over short distances. In Pike County, drivers along U.S. 23 near Pikeville and Coal Run could encounter slushy stretches. Hazard and Perry County roadways, including KY 15, may turn snow-covered during bursts. In Harlan and Letcher counties, higher terrain near Cumberland and Whitesburg is more likely to see accumulating snow.

Bridges and overpasses may ice over first, especially where snow briefly intensifies. Untreated rural roads in Knott and Martin counties could become slick within minutes. Motorists should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check live updates at GoKY before traveling.

Snow showers will taper later this evening, but slick spots may persist after sunset. The advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m., and additional updates could follow if heavier bands redevelop.
