Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Any spark along I-29 could spread quickly between noon and 6 p.m. Monday as wind gusts near 40 mph combine with dry grasses to create high fire danger across eastern South Dakota.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, mild and dry conditions paired with increasing southerly winds will elevate fire weather concerns mainly along and west of I-29. Peak fire danger is expected from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, when humidity levels drop and sustained winds strengthen. Officials classify grassland fire danger as high in areas including Mitchell, Huron and Chamberlain, with moderate to high conditions extending toward Sioux Falls and Brookings.

Wind speeds are forecast to reach 25 to 35 mph, with gusts approaching 40 mph at times. Along I-90 near Mitchell and along I-29 from Sioux Falls south toward Sioux City, crosswinds could also impact high-profile vehicles.

Dry fuels remain in place across much of the region, meaning any outdoor burning could quickly become uncontrollable. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid ditch burning, discard cigarettes properly and secure trailer chains that could spark along roadways.

While temperatures remain mild for late February, the combination of wind and low humidity sharply increases wildfire spread potential. Fire crews across southeastern South Dakota remain on alert through early evening.

Winds will gradually ease after sunset Monday, reducing the fire threat overnight. However, officials warn that additional breezy and dry days could renew concerns later this week if rainfall does not materialize.
