Springfield, IL – Breezy and cool conditions will continue across central Illinois today before a warming trend and increasing fire weather concerns develop Tuesday along major corridors including I-55, I-72, I-74 and I-57.
The National Weather Service in Central Illinois reports highs Monday will remain in the lower to mid-30s with brisk conditions. Temperatures will rebound Tuesday into the 40s and lower 50s as southwesterly winds strengthen. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph are expected during the afternoon hours, particularly along and west of the I-55 corridor from Bloomington to Springfield.
The combination of gusty winds, mild temperatures and relatively dry conditions may elevate fire danger Tuesday afternoon. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with equipment that could produce sparks, especially near dry grass along roadways and open fields.
By late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, a weather system will bring a chance for a wintry mix across portions of central Illinois. Current projections indicate a 40 to 60 percent chance of precipitation, with light snow accumulation possible in some areas, particularly north of I-72 and along I-74 near Peoria and Champaign.
While significant winter impacts are not expected at this time, motorists should monitor updates as timing and precipitation type may shift. Travel along I-55, I-72 and I-57 could become slick if surface temperatures fall near freezing.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware through midweek as conditions transition from breezy fire concerns to a potential late-week wintry mix.
