Pueblo, CO – Critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop Tuesday across southern Colorado, particularly along the I-25 corridor and adjacent plains, where strong winds and very low humidity will combine to create dangerous wildfire potential.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday as west winds increase with gusts up to 35 mph. At the same time, relative humidity values are forecast to drop below 15 percent, creating an environment favorable for rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior.

The highest risk will stretch from Colorado Springs south through Pueblo and Trinidad along I-25, and eastward toward La Junta along US-50. Dry grasses and dormant vegetation will allow any fire that starts to spread quickly, with erratic movement possible in gusty winds.

Peak fire danger is expected between late morning and early evening Tuesday, roughly 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., when temperatures warm and humidity bottoms out. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks, including welding, grinding, or using power equipment in dry grass.

Drivers along I-25 and US-50 should remain alert for reduced visibility if smoke develops near roadways. Fire officials emphasize that even a small ignition source, such as a discarded cigarette or dragging trailer chain, could quickly escalate into a fast-moving grassfire.

Residents are urged to secure trailer chains, properly discard cigarettes, avoid parking on dry vegetation, and stay weather-aware throughout the day. Conditions may improve slightly after sunset as winds diminish and humidity begins to recover.
