Burlington, VT – Gusty northerly winds and sharply colder air will create brisk and uncomfortable conditions across Vermont and northern New York through tonight, with the coldest wind chills arriving by early Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Burlington reports peak wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph will continue through the day and into the overnight hours. While snowfall totals have decreased due to a more southerly storm track, the combination of lingering light snow and gusty winds may produce areas of drifting snow, particularly in southern Vermont and across higher elevations.

Motorists along I-89 from Burlington to Montpelier, as well as US-7 through the Champlain Valley, could encounter occasional slick spots and brief reductions in visibility where snow drifts across roadways. In northern New York, drivers on I-87 and US-9 near Plattsburgh should also be alert for crosswinds and localized blowing snow.

The bigger concern overnight will be the cold. Wind chills are forecast to drop to around -15 degrees in parts of northern New York, with single-digit to below-zero wind chills common across much of Vermont by daybreak Tuesday. Even areas such as Rutland and Springfield will feel significantly colder due to persistent winds.

Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors are protected from the cold. While conditions will gradually improve Tuesday as winds ease, early morning commuters should prepare for biting wind chills and pockets of drifting snow before sunrise.
