Blacksburg, VA – Upslope snow will continue across the central Appalachians today, bringing accumulating snowfall and hazardous travel to portions of southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia, particularly along I-81, I-77, US-460 and I-64.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports that snowfall will be most persistent in the mountains, with western Greenbrier County, West Virginia, facing the highest totals. Between 2 and 8 inches of snow is possible there, especially in higher elevations near Beckley and along I-64. Elsewhere across southeast West Virginia and the mountains of southwest Virginia, including Bluefield, Wytheville and Blacksburg, 1 to 4 inches of accumulation is expected.

Snow will gradually taper off early this evening for most areas, though lingering snow showers could persist overnight across the southeast West Virginia mountains. Periods of blowing and drifting snow are possible in exposed ridges, further reducing visibility and creating slick spots on elevated roadways and bridges.

Motorists traveling along I-81 through Montgomery County, I-77 near the Virginia-North Carolina border and US-460 between Blacksburg and Bluefield should plan for slippery pavement and reduced traction during the afternoon commute. Secondary and untreated roads may remain snow-covered even after snowfall lightens.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and allow extra travel time. Conditions may improve late tonight as snowfall diminishes, but cold temperatures could refreeze slush on road surfaces.

Residents should continue monitoring forecast updates as mountain snow showers gradually wind down across the region.
