Massachusetts is locked in a full blizzard this morning as wind-driven snow slams eastern communities and visibility drops below a quarter mile. In Boston, snow whips sideways across I-93 and Route 1, and plows struggle to keep pace. Wind gusts are roaring high enough to rattle windows and sway tree limbs.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Additional snowfall between 14 and 21 inches is expected, with wind gusts up to 75 mph. Those winds, combined with heavy snow, are producing whiteout conditions and dangerous drifts.
Eastern and southeastern Massachusetts, including Boston, Brockton, Quincy and Plymouth, remain under the core of the storm. Rhode Island communities from Providence to Newport are also seeing intense snowfall rates. Travel is strongly discouraged. Officials urge residents to stay off roads unless it is an emergency.
Light, fluffy snow continues to pile up quickly, and strong gusts are snapping smaller branches. Sporadic power outages are possible as winds peak through the day. If you lose power, use generators outdoors only and away from windows.
Snow gradually tapers Tuesday with highs near 32 and improving visibility. Another round of snow and rain becomes likely Wednesday with highs near 37, followed by a milder trend late week. By next weekend, temperatures edge into the 40s, hinting at a slow moderation in the 6- to 10-day outlook.
