Binghamton, NY – Travel across Sullivan County, New York, and parts of northeast Pennsylvania could become impossible overnight as blizzard conditions intensify before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for Sullivan County in New York and Pike and southern Wayne counties in Pennsylvania. An additional 5 to 12 inches of snow is expected, with wind gusts up to 45 mph. Even when snowfall briefly lightens, strong winds will loft freshly fallen snow, dropping visibility below a quarter mile and creating deep drifts in open areas.
Roads including Interstate 84 near Milford, Route 6 around Honesdale and Route 17 near Monticello may become impassable at times. Higher elevations face the strongest gusts, increasing the risk of downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.
PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission urge drivers to delay all nonessential travel and check 511PA for live conditions. In New York, motorists can call 511 for updates.
Officials advise restricting travel to emergencies only. Anyone who must be on the road should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded. Blizzard conditions may persist through the evening commute, and additional impacts are likely until winds ease Monday night.
