East Tennessee-Southwest Virginia Weather Alert: 8 Inches of Snow in Smokies and 40 MPH Gusts Until Midnight Monday Night

Morristown, TN – Snow showers will continue to sweep across the higher elevations of East Tennessee and southwest Virginia, creating slick mountain roads and subzero wind chills through Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight Monday night for the Smoky Mountains, Johnson County, Unicoi County and portions of southeast Greene and Carter counties in Tennessee, along with Wise, Russell and Washington counties in Virginia. Snow totals will range from 1 to 4 inches between 2,000 and 4,000 feet, with 4 to 8 inches above 4,000 feet in the Smokies. Northwest winds will gust to around 40 mph, pushing wind chill values between 5 and 10 degrees below zero on the highest peaks.

Roads through Gatlinburg, Cades Cove and along U.S. 441 over Newfound Gap may become snow-covered at times. In southwest Virginia, including Wise, Norton and Abingdon, 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected, with isolated 4 to 6 inch totals on the highest ridges and wind chills near zero.

Lee and Scott counties in Virginia may see lighter accumulations, mainly a dusting to 2 inches at elevations above 2,000 feet.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. Snow showers will persist into Monday night, and additional slick spots could redevelop during both the morning and evening commutes.
