Harris County, Texas – A 57-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the 12800 block of Woodforest, prompting an arrest by deputies.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was identified as Rayford Howard, 57. Authorities said Howard was crossing the 12800 block of Woodforest, walking from a store to his apartment, when he was allegedly struck by a white pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed.

Investigators allege the driver, identified as 27-year-old Benjamin Lira, fled the scene after striking Howard. The victim died from his injuries.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said members of the Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division and District 3 patrol identified Lira as a suspect. Authorities located both Lira and the white pickup truck.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Lira was charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid and booked into the Harris County Jail. Officials also stated he was in violation of a DWI bond out of Harris County.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The crash underscores ongoing pedestrian safety concerns in busy residential-commercial corridors, particularly for residents walking short distances to nearby stores or apartments.
