Augusta, Maine – Heavy snow arriving by 7 a.m. Monday could quickly cover roads across central Maine, setting up a messy evening commute as winds gust to 40 mph and visibility drops.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday for Central Interior Cumberland, Androscoggin, Kennebec and Interior Waldo counties. Snowfall totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected, with gusty winds creating blowing and drifting snow. In southwest Maine and much of central and southern New Hampshire, a separate Winter Storm Warning runs from midnight through 10 p.m. Monday, where 6 to 12 inches of snow and gusts up to 35 mph are forecast.

Across Maine, roads in Augusta, Lewiston, Auburn and Waterville will likely turn snow-covered by midday. Gusts could whip dry snow across open stretches of I-95 and Route 202, lowering visibility. In New Hampshire, travel through Concord, Rochester, Keene and Laconia may deteriorate quickly, especially in open and rural areas where drifting develops.

The Monday evening commute poses the highest risk as snowfall rates peak and winds remain strong. While widespread outages are not expected, some tree limbs could break under wind stress.

Officials urge drivers to delay non-essential travel, carry emergency supplies and monitor conditions at NewEngland511.org. Warnings remain in effect through 10 p.m. Monday, and additional advisories could follow if snowfall intensifies.
