Charleston, W.Va. – Heavy snow is spreading across West Virginia tonight as the powerful coastal storm intensifies to the east, pulling steady snowfall into the Mountain State and creating hazardous travel conditions. While the most intense blizzard conditions remain closer to the Atlantic coastline, accumulating snow will impact communities from Charleston to Morgantown through Monday.

According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, winter storm warnings are in effect across much of the state, including Kanawha, Monongalia and Raleigh counties. Snow will continue overnight and into Monday, reducing visibility and covering roads across Beckley, Clarksburg and Parkersburg. The system is part of a larger East Coast storm bringing widespread impacts, but inland mountain communities will still see significant disruptions.

The snow falling across West Virginia will be dense at times, increasing its weight and the strain involved in clearing it. Health officials urge residents to take frequent breaks, avoid lifting heavy shovelfuls and push snow instead of throwing it whenever possible. Overexertion during snow removal can trigger serious medical emergencies, especially for older adults and those with heart or respiratory conditions. Even where totals are lower than along the coast, the physical demands of clearing heavy snow remain a concern. The added weight may also stress tree limbs and utility lines, leading to isolated outages in higher elevations.

Travel is strongly discouraged except for emergencies. The West Virginia Division of Highways warns that Interstate 64, Interstate 79 and mountain routes may become slick and snow-covered during peak snowfall Monday. If stranded, drivers should remain inside their vehicle with a winter emergency kit.

Snow will taper late Monday into Tuesday, though cold air may keep roads icy. Additional advisories could follow as the storm moves farther northeast.
