Providence, R.I. – Heavy, wet snow is overtaking Rhode Island tonight as a powerful bomb cyclone pushes into southern New England, prompting blizzard warnings and urgent calls for residents to avoid travel and protect their health. Snow will intensify overnight and peak Monday, creating near whiteout conditions and dangerous roads statewide.

According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings cover all of Rhode Island, including Providence, Warwick, Newport and Pawtucket. Winter storm warnings extend across the broader New England region as the system tracks northeast. Some areas along the coast could approach 30 inches of snowfall, with the heaviest bands expected during the day Monday before tapering late.

The storm’s biggest hidden danger may come during cleanup. This system is producing dense, moisture-laden snow that weighs far more than typical winter storms. The added weight can snap tree limbs and strain power lines, raising the risk of outages from Cranston to Woonsocket. It also makes shoveling especially hazardous. Health officials urge residents to take frequent breaks, stay hydrated and avoid lifting heavy loads of snow. Pushing snow instead of lifting can reduce strain. Overexertion during snow removal can trigger serious medical emergencies, especially for older adults and those with heart or respiratory conditions.

Travel is strongly discouraged except for emergencies. Roads including Interstate 95 and Route 6 may become impassable during peak snowfall Monday. If drivers become stranded, officials recommend staying inside the vehicle with a winter emergency kit rather than attempting to walk in blizzard conditions.

Heavy snow and strong winds will gradually ease late Monday into Tuesday, though gusty conditions may linger. Additional advisories could follow as the storm exits the region.
