Gaylord, Michigan – Drivers across northern Lower Michigan have less than 10 hours before snow and 35 mph wind gusts create slick, low-visibility travel for the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday for communities near the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines, including Presque Isle, Alpena, Leelanau, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Alcona and Manistee counties. Additional snowfall of up to 3 inches is expected, with isolated totals reaching 4 to 5 inches.

North to north-northwest winds will push falling snow across roadways, reducing visibility and covering pavement, especially on east-to-west routes. The US-23 corridor between Cheboygan and Alpena is expected to see repeated blowing snow, while exposed bridges and overpasses along M-32, M-72 and sections of I-75 could turn slick before daybreak.

MDOT crews continue treatment operations, but drivers should expect snow-covered stretches and sudden visibility drops below a half mile at times.

Officials urge residents to slow down, allow extra braking distance and leave early for work or school. Conditions improve gradually after 11 a.m. Monday, but additional advisories could be issued if lake-enhanced snow bands persist.
