Hurley, Wisconsin – Drivers in Iron County have just hours before lake effect snow makes highways and side streets slick through midnight tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Iron County, including Hurley and the Tribal Lands of the northwestern area of the Lac du Flambeau Band, until 12 a.m. CST. Lake effect snow will continue this afternoon and evening, adding up to 3 inches in localized bands.
The snow may fall steadily at times, coating untreated roads and reducing traction on bridges and rural highways. Portions of U.S. Highway 2 and Highway 77 could see periodic snow cover as bands shift inland from Lake Superior. Visibility may briefly dip during heavier bursts, especially on open stretches north and west of Hurley.
WisDOT encourages motorists to slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Drivers can check 511 or visit 511wi.gov for updated road conditions before heading out.
Snow intensity should taper near midnight, but slick spots may linger into early Monday where temperatures remain below freezing.
