Duluth, Minnesota – Residents in Grand Marais and across southern Cook County should prepare now for the potential of heavy snow that could quickly cover roads and reduce visibility below a quarter mile by early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday afternoon for Southern Cook County, including the Grand Portage Reservation. Snow totals between 3 and 8 inches are possible, with heavier bursts at times.
If the system strengthens as expected, snowfall rates could increase before daybreak Tuesday, impacting Highway 61 along the North Shore and inland routes near Grand Marais. Gusty winds may create blowing snow, lowering visibility and making travel hazardous during the Tuesday morning commute.
Forecasters note that while snowfall may be heavy at times, it is not expected to be as dense as last week’s system, which could limit some stress on trees and power lines.
Now is the time to review travel plans, monitor updated forecasts and prepare for possible rapid road deterioration. Additional alerts or a Winter Storm Warning could be issued as confidence increases Monday.
