Valparaiso, Indiana – Drivers in Porter County could encounter rapidly changing road conditions this evening as lake-effect snow bands strengthen and winds gust up to 40 mph near the Lake Michigan shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon CST Monday for Porter County. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected in the most persistent bands, with locally higher totals possible east of State Road 49 and north of U.S. Route 30. Winds near the lakeshore will gust between 35 and 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow tonight into Monday.

The worst travel conditions are expected this evening through the Monday morning commute. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, may become slick in Valparaiso, Chesterton and Portage. Snow bands could create sharp visibility changes along I-94 and U.S. 20, where conditions may vary significantly over just a few miles.

Officials urge motorists to slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Check 511in.org for real-time road updates before heading out.

Snow showers will gradually diminish by midday Monday, but drifting and patchy slick spots may linger in open areas near the lake.
