Front Royal, Virginia – Travel along the Blue Ridge, including stretches of Skyline Drive, could turn treacherous tonight as up to 8 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 45 mph batter higher elevations through 7 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday for the Northern and Central Virginia Blue Ridge. Snow totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected, with localized amounts up to 12 inches on the highest peaks of Shenandoah National Park.

Snow will continue through the night, and strong northwest winds will increase after sunset. Blowing snow may reduce visibility below a quarter mile at times, especially along exposed ridges and mountain passes. Bridges and overpasses along U.S. 340 and Route 211 will likely become slick first as temperatures remain cold.

The weight of snow combined with gusty winds could snap tree limbs and down isolated power lines. Travel may become very difficult, particularly during the early Monday morning commute.

Officials urge drivers to delay unnecessary travel and check 511 for updated road conditions. If travel is unavoidable, carry extra food, water and a flashlight in your vehicle.

Snow and winds will gradually ease after sunrise Monday, but icy patches may linger into mid-morning.
