Baltimore, Maryland – Roads across central and northeastern Maryland could rapidly turn snow-covered late Sunday afternoon as rain flips to heavy snow between 3 and 6 p.m., setting up a difficult Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday for Carroll, Baltimore, Cecil, Anne Arundel, Harford, Howard, Calvert and St. Mary’s counties. Snow totals between 5 and 10 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts up to 14 inches possible in northeast Maryland. Northwest winds will gust between 35 and 45 mph overnight into Monday.

Snow will intensify Sunday evening, reducing visibility below a half mile at times. Major routes including I-95, I-695 and Route 50 may become slick quickly after the changeover. In Cecil and Harford counties, heavier bands could create deeper accumulation and blowing snow before daybreak Monday.

Travel may become very difficult to impossible overnight. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential trips and check 511 for updated road conditions. If travel is necessary, keep extra food, water and a flashlight in your vehicle.

Snow will taper off Monday morning, but gusty winds could continue to cause drifting and slick spots into late morning.
