Rainelle, West Virginia – Roads across western Greenbrier County could become snow-covered and nearly impassable tonight as up to 12 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 45 mph sweep through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday for western Greenbrier County, including Rainelle, Quinwood and Duo. Snow totals between 5 and 12 inches are expected, with the heaviest accumulation in higher elevations. Gusty winds will create blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility at times.
Snowfall combined with temperatures dropping into the teens tonight will lead to icy conditions on bridges and overpasses first. Wind chills may fall near zero late tonight into Monday morning, increasing the risk for frostbite for anyone outdoors without proper protection.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate, especially during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility on Route 60 and other rural roads. Gusty winds may also snap tree branches and trigger isolated power outages.
Officials urge residents to delay unnecessary travel. If you must drive, carry extra food, water and a flashlight, and check 511 for the latest road updates.
Snow and wind will gradually ease after midnight Monday night, but slick spots may linger into early Tuesday morning.
