Boston, Massachusetts – Travel across eastern Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island could become impossible by late Sunday afternoon as 75 mph wind gusts combine with up to 25 inches of snow, setting the stage for life-threatening whiteout conditions through early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Tuesday for eastern, northeastern and southeastern Massachusetts, including Boston, Cambridge, Brockton and Plymouth, along with all of Rhode Island. Snow totals are expected to range from 18 to 25 inches, with winds powerful enough to reduce visibility below a quarter mile for hours at a time.
In Suffolk County, heavy bands could bury Boston streets overnight Sunday, while I-93 and the Massachusetts Turnpike face rapid deterioration. Along the South Shore and Cape Cod, including Barnstable, Falmouth and Provincetown, 75 mph gusts may down trees and power lines. Rhode Island cities such as Providence, Warwick and Newport could see widespread blowing snow and scattered outages as winds peak late Sunday night into Monday.
Officials urge residents to avoid all non-emergency travel. Keep phones charged, secure outdoor items and prepare for potential power loss. If stranded, remain in your vehicle.
Blizzard conditions may ease after daybreak Tuesday, but cleanup and additional advisories could follow as the region digs out.
