Elkhart, Indiana – Roads across Elkhart County are turning snow-covered this morning as lake effect bands intensify, creating slick travel and sudden visibility drops that could impact drivers within the next few hours. Gusts near 30 mph are pushing snow across open stretches of the Indiana Toll Road and U.S. 33, increasing the risk of drifting in rural areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Elkhart County until 1 a.m. EST Monday. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches, with the heaviest amounts likely in the far western and northwestern portions of the county, closer to the St. Joseph County line.
Snow bursts may briefly cut visibility below a half mile, especially along I-80/90 and State Road 19. County road crews continue plowing primary routes, but secondary and untreated roads could become snow-packed by evening.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check Indiana 511 for real-time road conditions before heading out. Conditions improve after 1 a.m. Monday as snow bands weaken, but slick spots may linger into the early morning hours.
