New Orleans, Louisiana – A single spark could ignite fast-moving brush fires by 9 a.m. Sunday as strong north winds and critically dry air spread across southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for all of southeast Louisiana and portions of southern and coastal Mississippi. North winds will range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity will fall as low as 20 percent, creating conditions where fires can catch and spread quickly.

Communities from Baton Rouge and New Orleans to Houma, Slidell, Gulfport and Pascagoula face elevated wildfire danger. Dry grasses and wooded areas along Interstate 10, U.S. 90 and Interstate 55 could ignite rapidly from debris burning, equipment sparks or discarded cigarettes. Gusty winds may push flames toward homes and roadways with little warning.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass and report smoke immediately to 911. Fire crews will remain on heightened alert through sunset, and additional advisories could follow if dry, breezy weather continues into the week.
