New York, New York – Travel across New York City, Long Island and southern Connecticut could become nearly impossible by late afternoon as blizzard conditions develop with up to 24 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday for all five boroughs, Long Island, southern Westchester County and coastal Connecticut, including Stamford and New Haven. The heaviest snow and strongest winds are expected Sunday night into Monday.

Forecasters call for 16 to 24 inches of accumulation, with snowfall rates potentially exceeding 1 to 2 inches per hour at times. Winds gusting to 60 mph will produce widespread blowing snow and visibility below a quarter mile, creating prolonged whiteout conditions on major roadways including I-95, the Long Island Expressway and the Belt Parkway.

The combination of heavy, wind-driven snow and strong gusts could down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered outages. Both the Monday morning and evening commutes face significant disruption, and transit delays are likely.

Officials urge residents to avoid all non-emergency travel, charge devices and prepare for possible power interruptions. Blizzard conditions will persist into Monday evening before gradually easing after 6 p.m., though drifting snow may continue overnight.
