New York, N.Y. – Roads across New York City, Long Island and much of New Jersey could become impassable by late afternoon as snowfall rates exceed 2 inches per hour and wind gusts top 55 mph through 6 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service offices in New York and Mount Holly, Blizzard Warnings stretch from northeastern New Jersey and the five boroughs to Long Island, southern Connecticut, eastern Pennsylvania and much of Delaware and eastern Maryland. Snow develops Sunday morning, turns heavy by afternoon and peaks Sunday night into Monday with whiteout conditions and visibility under one-quarter mile.

New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, could see 16 to 20 inches, while parts of Long Island and central New Jersey may approach or exceed 24 inches. Coastal Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic counties in New Jersey face 20 to 28 inches with gusts up to 60 mph, raising the risk of scattered power outages and downed trees.

Major corridors including the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, I-95, I-78 and the Long Island Expressway may shut down as drifting snow buries lanes. Officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only and keep winter survival kits in vehicles.

Snow tapers gradually Monday afternoon, but strong winds and drifting will continue to snarl travel into Monday evening. Blizzard warnings remain in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, and additional advisories may follow as cleanup begins.
