Cape Charles, Virginia – Drivers along Virginia’s Eastern Shore could face sudden whiteouts this afternoon as a blizzard brings up to 6 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 55 mph through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday for Northampton County. While snowfall totals are lower than areas to the north, powerful winds will whip falling snow into blowing and drifting bands that sharply reduce visibility, especially on open stretches of roadway.

U.S. Route 13, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel approaches and exposed rural roads near Cape Charles could become hazardous as snow intensifies late today and continues into Monday. The strongest winds and most dangerous travel conditions are expected Sunday night into Monday, potentially impacting both the morning and evening commutes.

Wind gusts up to 55 mph may snap tree limbs and down power lines, leading to isolated outages across the county. Loose outdoor objects could become airborne in the strongest gusts. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for possible power disruptions. If travel is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit and check 511 for the latest road conditions.

Snow and strong winds will gradually taper Monday evening, but hazardous travel may linger until the warning expires at 7 p.m. Monday.
