Newton, New Jersey – Travel across northwest New Jersey could become impossible by late morning as a powerful winter storm drops up to 26 inches of snow and unleashes 45 mph wind gusts through 6 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for Sussex, Warren and Hunterdon counties. Snow will rapidly intensify this afternoon, with the heaviest bands arriving tonight. Forecasters say snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, while strong winds whip snow into whiteout conditions and create significant drifting.

Major routes including Interstate 80, Route 206 and Route 31 may see rapid accumulation, especially on bridges and elevated roadways. Conditions are expected to deteriorate ahead of the Monday morning commute and remain dangerous into the evening drive. Blowing snow could sharply reduce visibility, even after plows pass.

Heavy, wind-driven snow may snap tree limbs and trigger isolated power outages across the region, including Newton, Washington and Flemington. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for extended time indoors. Keep phones charged and have flashlights and supplies ready in case of outages.

Snow will taper gradually during the day Monday, but gusty winds will continue to cause blowing and drifting snow. Additional alerts may follow as cleanup begins late Monday.
