Greenville, South Carolina – Snow will begin piling up across the North Carolina mountains by midnight, with higher elevations facing up to 7 inches and wind gusts strong enough to create near whiteout conditions before the Monday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight through midnight Monday night for Madison, Yancey and Haywood counties. Valley locations can expect 1 to 3 inches of snow, while elevations along the Tennessee border may receive 4 to 7 inches, with locally higher totals possible. Wind gusts up to 50 mph Sunday night and Monday could cause blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility across ridge tops.

Communities including Waynesville, Burnsville, Marshall and Hot Springs may see snow-covered roads by daybreak Sunday. Higher terrain routes such as U.S. 19, U.S. 23 and sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway could become difficult or impassable at times.

The advisory highlights impacts to both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Drivers should avoid non-essential travel in higher elevations, reduce speed and check North Carolina 511 for road updates.

Snow showers gradually taper late Monday night, but drifting and icy patches may linger into early Tuesday as cold air remains locked in across the mountains.
