Chicago, Illinois – Lake effect snow will continue to impact Porter County through late Monday morning, creating slick bridges and hazardous travel before the Monday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight through noon Monday for Porter County. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches are expected, with locally higher totals possible mainly east of State Road 49 and north of U.S. Route 30. Some blowing and drifting snow may develop Sunday night into Monday as winds increase.

Communities including Valparaiso, Portage and Chesterton could see snow-covered roads overnight. Interstate 94, U.S. 20 and U.S. 30 may become slick, especially on elevated surfaces and near the Lake Michigan shoreline. A brief lull in snowfall may occur around midday Sunday before another round of lake effect snow develops later Sunday afternoon and continues into Monday morning.

The greatest impact is expected during the Monday morning commute. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check 511in.org for real-time road updates before heading out.

Snow showers gradually diminish late Monday morning, but patchy slick spots may linger beyond noon as temperatures remain near freezing.
