Wakefield, Virginia – Snow will begin falling across Hampton Roads by early Sunday afternoon, setting up slick bridges and overpasses before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Monday for Sussex, Surry, Southampton, Isle of Wight and the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Total snowfall up to 2 inches is expected, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph that could create areas of blowing snow.
Roads across southeast Virginia may turn slippery late Sunday as temperatures hover near freezing. Elevated roadways, including sections of I-64, I-264 and the Chesapeake Expressway, are most likely to become slick first. Periods of light snow Sunday night into Monday could impact both the morning and evening commutes.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for real-time road updates. Residents should secure loose outdoor items as gusty winds develop.
Snow tapers toward Monday evening, but patchy slick spots may linger after sunset as colder air settles in. Additional updates are possible if snowfall totals trend higher.
