Baltimore, Maryland – Snow will begin spreading across the higher elevations of western Maryland and the Shenandoah Valley by late Sunday morning, leading to slick mountain roads before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday for central and eastern Allegany County in Maryland, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page and Warren counties in Virginia, and Hampshire and Hardy counties in West Virginia. Higher hills could receive between 2 and 6 inches of snow, while valleys see a coating to 2 inches. Wind gusts up to 35 mph may create areas of blowing snow on exposed ridges.
Communities including Cumberland, Winchester, Front Royal, Luray and Romney may see rapidly changing road conditions through Sunday afternoon and evening. Routes such as I-68, I-81 and U.S. 522 could become snow covered in higher terrain, with reduced visibility during heavier bursts.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and check 511 road updates before departure. Snow tapers toward daybreak Monday, but slick spots may linger as temperatures remain near freezing. Additional advisories are possible if snowfall rates increase.
