Boston, Massachusetts – Snow and wind gusts up to 70 mph will begin hammering Nantucket by late Sunday afternoon, creating near whiteout conditions and the potential for power outages before the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Nantucket County from 4 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Snow totals are expected to reach 4 to 6 inches, while powerful winds could gust as high as 70 mph. Those winds may produce blowing snow that sharply reduces visibility and increases the risk of tree damage.

Roads across Nantucket, including Milestone Road and Madaket Road, could become snow covered Sunday evening as conditions deteriorate quickly. Blowing and drifting snow may make travel difficult overnight and through Monday, with the strongest gusts capable of downing tree limbs and causing scattered power outages.

Ferry and air travel could also face disruptions as winds intensify. Residents should secure loose outdoor objects, charge devices and prepare for the possibility of isolated outages.

Snow and wind gradually ease early Tuesday morning, but hazardous travel may linger through the advisory’s expiration at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Additional alerts are possible if conditions worsen.
