Grand Rapids, Michigan – Lake effect snow will continue to sweep into Allegan and Van Buren counties through early Monday afternoon, dropping up to 4 inches and blowing snow across busy lakeshore highways before the commute wraps up.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday. Additional accumulations between 2 and 4 inches are expected across Holland, South Haven and inland communities, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph. Those gusts may create blowing and drifting snow, especially on open stretches near Lake Michigan.
Drivers along I-196 and US-31 could encounter sudden visibility drops as narrow snow bands shift onshore. Conditions may vary sharply over just a few miles, with heavier bursts briefly lowering visibility below a half mile while nearby areas see lighter snow. Rural roads in Allegan County may turn slick quickly as snow sticks to colder pavement.
The greatest impact is expected during the Monday morning commute, when untreated roads could remain snow covered. Motorists should reduce speed, allow extra travel time and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions.
Snow showers gradually taper by early Monday afternoon, but patchy blowing snow may linger until winds ease. Additional updates are possible if bands intensify overnight.
