Marquette, Michigan – Snow and gusty winds will continue across western Upper Michigan through late Sunday night, with lake effect bands reducing visibility along key Lake Superior corridors before the Monday commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 1 a.m. Monday for Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Baraga and Marquette counties. Additional snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected in Keweenaw, Northern Houghton and Baraga counties, with 2 to 7 inches in Marquette County. Winds will gust up to 35 mph inland and near 40 mph along Lake Superior.
Across the U.P., higher terrain areas near Houghton, Hancock and Copper Harbor could see the highest totals. In Marquette and Gwinn, moderate lake effect snow bands Sunday may create very poor visibility, especially along M-28 between Marquette and Munising. Snow accumulating on shoreline ice combined with strong winds could lead to sudden whiteout conditions near the lake.
Travel may become difficult at times, particularly Sunday afternoon and evening as winds increase. Drivers should slow down, allow extra distance between vehicles and prepare for rapidly changing visibility. Advisories remain in effect until early Monday as lake effect snow gradually tapers.
