Valparaiso, Indiana – Snow will begin developing around midnight, and lake effect bands could drop up to 5 inches across parts of Porter County before the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight through noon Monday. Lake effect snow is expected to produce 2 to 5 inches of accumulation, with locally higher totals possible mainly east of State Road 49 and north of U.S. Route 30. Some blowing and drifting snow may develop Sunday night into Monday.

Across northwest Indiana, lake-enhanced snow will likely intensify late tonight into Sunday morning. A brief lull may occur toward midday Sunday before another round of lake effect snow redevelops Sunday afternoon and continues into early Monday. In Valparaiso, Portage and Chesterton, bridges and overpasses could become slick quickly as temperatures remain cold.

Road conditions may deteriorate late Sunday night, with the highest impacts during the Monday morning commute. Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time and monitor Indiana 511 for real-time road updates. The advisory remains in effect until noon Monday as lake effect bands gradually weaken.
