Atlantic City, New Jersey – Travel across the Mid-Atlantic could become life-threatening by Sunday afternoon as bombogenesis rapidly strengthens offshore, unleashing 50 to 65 mph wind gusts and up to 2 feet of snow from New Jersey to Massachusetts.

According to the National Weather Service, Blizzard Warnings stretch from coastal Maryland and Delaware through New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, southern Connecticut and into eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Most warnings begin between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday and remain in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, with parts of Massachusetts extended through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

In New Jersey, Ocean and Monmouth counties could see 20 to 24 inches with 50 mph gusts, while Atlantic and Cape May counties expect 12 to 20 inches. Mercer, Middlesex and Morris counties may receive 16 to 20 inches. In Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, 10 to 20 inches combined with 40 to 50 mph winds will produce whiteouts on Route 1 and U.S. 50.

New York City, Long Island and southern Connecticut face 15 to 20 inches with gusts up to 60 mph, highest on eastern Long Island. Boston to Providence could see 1 to 2 feet of snow with 60 mph winds.

Officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only. Whiteout conditions may drop visibility below a quarter mile Sunday night into Monday, crippling both commutes. Monitor state 511 systems for closures as this historic coastal storm intensifies.
