Pearisburg, Virginia – Snow will begin developing around 1 a.m. Sunday across the mountain counties of southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia, setting the stage for slick roads before sunrise and bitter wind chills by Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Tuesday for Bland, Giles and Bath counties in Virginia, along with Monroe and Eastern Greenbrier counties in West Virginia. Snow accumulations up to 3 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph.

Across the higher elevations, rain will change to snow overnight as colder air pushes in behind a strengthening coastal storm. In Pearisburg, Bland, Union and Lewisburg, roads could turn slushy and then icy, especially on bridges and elevated stretches of U.S. Route 460 and U.S. Route 219. Gusty winds may create blowing snow in open areas and along ridge tops.

Temperatures will fall into the teens Sunday night, with wind chills dropping into the single digits. Travel may become hazardous during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Drivers should slow down, allow extra time and check Virginia and West Virginia 511 systems for the latest road conditions as the advisory continues through early Tuesday.
