Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Snow will begin around 5 a.m. Sunday, and bursts exceeding 1 inch per hour could quickly cover highways across central Pennsylvania before the morning is over.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday for Dauphin, Schuylkill, Lebanon, Adams, York and Lancaster counties. Total snowfall between 6 and 12 inches is possible, with higher amounts where heavier snow bands persist. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph Sunday night and Monday, increasing the risk of downed tree limbs and sporadic power outages.

Statewide impacts will stretch across the Susquehanna Valley and south-central Pennsylvania. In Harrisburg, York and Lancaster, snow-covered roads may develop rapidly Sunday morning. Interstate 83, Route 30, Interstate 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike could become slick and snow-packed, especially as snowfall intensifies Sunday afternoon and overnight. Gusty winds may blow snow across open roadways, reducing visibility.

Travel could become very difficult to impossible, particularly during the Monday morning commute. Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel, dress in layers if heading outdoors and monitor PennDOT’s 511 system for real-time updates. The warning remains in effect until early Monday afternoon, and snowfall totals may increase if localized heavy bands develop.
