Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Snow will begin falling by 7 a.m. Sunday, and up to 18 inches could blanket southeast Pennsylvania before the Monday evening commute ends, threatening major highways and mass transit routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Philadelphia, Delaware, Chester, Montgomery and Bucks counties from 7 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday. Forecasters expect 14 to 18 inches of total snowfall, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph. Blowing snow will reduce visibility and create drifting on exposed roadways.

The storm will have statewide ripple effects, but the heaviest impacts concentrate along the Interstate 95 corridor and surrounding suburbs. In Philadelphia, snowfall rates may intensify Sunday afternoon and continue overnight, quickly covering the Schuylkill Expressway, Roosevelt Boulevard and Interstate 76. In Norristown, West Chester, Doylestown and Media, gusts near 40 mph could push snow across untreated secondary roads, making travel hazardous before dawn Monday.

Travel could become very difficult to impossible at times, especially late Sunday night through midday Monday. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, prepare for delays on SEPTA services and monitor PennDOT’s 511 system for live road updates. The warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, and additional alerts could follow if snowfall rates exceed projections.
