Nantucket, MA – Wind gusts up to 70 mph could lash Nantucket by Sunday night, raising the risk of ferry cancellations and scattered power outages as heavy snow piles up into early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning for Nantucket County. Forecasters say 5 to 8 inches of snow are possible, though periods of rain may mix in at times. The greater concern may be the wind, with gusts as high as 70 mph capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power disruptions.
Snow is expected to develop Sunday afternoon before intensifying Sunday night. Strong onshore winds could reduce visibility in blowing snow and create hazardous travel conditions on Milestone Road and Route 28. Conditions may deteriorate quickly overnight Sunday and remain dangerous through Monday’s morning and evening commutes.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, charge electronic devices and prepare for possible service interruptions. Travelers are urged to check ferry and flight schedules ahead of time and avoid unnecessary driving during peak winds.
The watch continues through Tuesday morning, and additional advisories or warnings could follow as confidence increases in snowfall totals and wind impacts.
