Albany, NY – Snowfall rates could hit 1 inch per hour late Sunday night, threatening to bury high terrain roads and snarl the Monday morning commute across eastern New York and southern Vermont.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening for Schoharie, western Schenectady, western Albany and eastern Rensselaer counties in New York, along with Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 10 inches are possible, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph. Forecasters say the heaviest totals will favor southern areas and higher elevations.

Communities including Cobleskill, Middleburgh, Duanesburg and Westerlo could see steady snow intensify late Sunday. In the Capital Region’s hill towns and across Route 7 near Hoosick Falls and Bennington, blowing snow may reduce visibility as winds strengthen. Interstate 87 and Interstate 90 could become slick during heavier bursts, especially overnight into early Monday.

Travel impacts are likely during both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Drivers should plan for snow-covered secondary roads, allow extra travel time and avoid sudden braking on hills and curves.

The watch remains in effect through Monday evening, and upgrades to warnings are possible as snowfall confidence increases.
