Charleston, W.Va. – Snow will spread across central and southern West Virginia by 1 a.m. Sunday, with 2 to 4 inches expected through 1 a.m. Tuesday. Even modest totals will create slick bridges and overpasses, impacting the Monday morning and evening commutes across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Tuesday for Jackson, Lincoln, Putnam, Wirt, Ritchie, Doddridge, Mingo, and McDowell counties. Periods of steady snow will develop overnight and continue at times into Monday.

Bridges will ice before daybreak Sunday.

Interstates 77 and 64, along with U.S. Route 52 near Williamson and Route 33 near Ripley, may become snow-covered, especially on elevated ramps and untreated secondary roads. Cities including Hurricane, Ravenswood, Welch, and Hamlin could see reduced visibility during heavier bursts Sunday night into Monday.

Residents should delay nonessential travel and check WV 511 for updated road conditions before leaving home. Drivers who must travel should allow extra time and increase following distance, particularly on hills and curves.

Light snow may linger into late Monday night, and the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday.
