Worcester, Mass. – Heavy snow will overspread central and western Massachusetts by 4 p.m. Sunday, with 10 to 20 inches expected before the storm ends at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will intensify Sunday night into Monday, creating blowing snow and dangerous road conditions during both the Monday morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Middlesex, and Essex counties. The long-duration storm will produce heavy snowfall rates at times Sunday night into Monday, significantly reducing visibility.
Road conditions will become snow-covered Sunday evening.
Interstates 90 and 91, along with Route 2 and Interstate 495, may see rapid accumulation and drifting snow, especially overnight into early Monday. Cities including Worcester, Springfield, Lowell, and Fitchburg could see totals near the upper end of the 10 to 20 inch range. Gusty winds may bring down tree branches and trigger scattered power outages.
Residents should avoid nonessential travel and prepare vehicles and emergency supplies before snowfall intensifies. Impacts are expected to persist into early Tuesday morning, prolonging travel disruptions beyond the Monday evening commute.
Snow and wind will taper before daybreak Tuesday, and the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday.
