Boston, MA – Roads across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island could become impassable by 4 p.m. Sunday as up to 2 feet of wind-driven snow and 60 mph gusts create whiteout conditions through 7 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from late Sunday afternoon through early Tuesday morning for the Boston-to-Providence corridor, including Suffolk, Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth counties in Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island. Snow totals are expected to range between 1 and 2 feet, with the strongest winds developing Sunday night and continuing into Monday.
Visibility may fall below one-quarter mile as blowing snow sweeps across Interstate 93, the Massachusetts Turnpike, Route 24 and I-95. Conditions are expected to severely impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes, with drifting snow covering plowed roadways and secondary streets in Boston, Cambridge, Quincy, Brockton, Providence and Warwick.
Heavy snow combined with 60 mph gusts could snap tree limbs and down power lines, raising the risk of outages for thousands of customers, especially across coastal Plymouth County, Cape Cod and Block Island.
Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel beginning Sunday evening. If travel becomes unavoidable, carry blankets, food, water and a fully charged phone, and stay with your vehicle if stranded. Blizzard conditions are expected to persist until 7 a.m. Tuesday, and additional alerts may follow as the storm intensifies.
