Washington, D.C. – Snow could begin falling by Sunday afternoon across the D.C. metro area, setting up slick roads and possible school and government delays by early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning for the District of Columbia, central and southern Maryland, and much of northern Virginia. Forecasters say 5 or more inches of snow are possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph that could blow snow across roadways and reduce visibility.

The watch includes Prince George’s and Charles counties in Maryland, along with Montgomery County’s central and southeastern sections. In Virginia, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, King George, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William counties are all within the potential impact zone.

If snowfall rates increase Sunday night, roads such as I-95, I-66 and the Capital Beltway could turn snow-covered before the Monday morning commute. Metrobus routes and regional rail service may also face delays if accumulation reaches warning criteria.

Residents should prepare now by checking vehicle readiness, reviewing telework options and monitoring updated forecasts. Confidence in exact totals will improve later today as the storm track becomes clearer, and watches could be upgraded to warnings if heavier bands develop.
