Poughkeepsie, NY – Drivers across eastern New York could face snow-covered highways and near-whiteout conditions by late Sunday morning as a winter storm threatens to drop up to a foot of snow before Monday’s commute begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon for the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Berkshires and northwestern Connecticut. Forecasters warn that 6 to 12 inches of snow are possible, with wind gusts reaching 45 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow across major roadways.

In New York, communities from Kingston and New Paltz to Hudson, Catskill and Poughkeepsie could see steady snowfall intensify Sunday afternoon and continue into early Monday. I-87 through Ulster and Greene counties and stretches of the Taconic State Parkway may become slick, especially on bridges and elevated ramps. In Columbia and Dutchess counties, including Beacon, Pawling and Dover Plains, gusty winds could snap tree limbs and trigger scattered power outages.

Across Berkshire County, including Pittsfield and North Adams, and in Litchfield County, Connecticut, road conditions may deteriorate quickly Sunday night. Blowing snow could reduce visibility below a half mile at times, complicating travel for the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Residents should avoid non-essential travel during heavier bursts of snow, charge electronic devices, and prepare for potential power disruptions. Slippery sidewalks and driveways may also increase the risk of falls.

Snow is expected to taper off by Monday afternoon, but additional advisories or warnings could be issued as confidence in snowfall totals increases.
