Des Moines, IA – Below-average temperatures and single-digit wind chills are settling over central Iowa this weekend, bringing breezy and cold conditions along Interstate 35 and Interstate 80 corridors.

According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, highs today will top out in the mid to lower 20s under mostly cloudy skies. Northwest winds between 6 and 14 mph, with gusts up to 18 mph, will keep wind chill values in the single digits at times.

Sunday will remain cold, with temperatures ranging from the upper teens to lower 20s. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the teens, especially in areas north and west of the metro.

Drivers along I-35, I-80, and I-235 should prepare for brisk crosswinds and cold pavement temperatures, particularly during early morning commutes. While no significant snowfall is expected in this period, untreated surfaces could remain slick where residual moisture refreezes.

Monday continues the chilly pattern, with highs again in the upper teens to mid-20s before a gradual warm-up begins Tuesday. Forecast highs Tuesday are expected to climb into the mid-30s, with additional moderation possible later in the week.

The extended stretch of cold may impact early morning commuters, students waiting for buses, and outdoor workers exposed to wind chills in the single digits.

Residents are encouraged to dress in layers and monitor updated forecasts for any changes in wind or temperature trends.
