Norfolk, VA – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for eastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, where up to 9 inches of heavy wet snow and wind gusts near 50 mph could impact Interstate 64 and US-13 travel Sunday night into Monday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Wakefield, a strong coastal low-pressure system will develop Sunday, bringing rain that transitions to snow Sunday evening and continuing into Monday morning.
Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snowfall across much of eastern Virginia, including Richmond and areas along Interstate 95. Higher totals of 5 to 9 inches are possible across the Northern Neck and the Eastern Shore, including Accomack County and areas near US-13 and US-50.
In addition to accumulating snow, breezy to windy conditions are expected. Gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph along coastal sections, including Virginia Beach and Norfolk, potentially leading to reduced visibility and isolated power outages.
Travel impacts are likely from Sunday night through the Monday morning commute, particularly in areas receiving 2 inches or more of snow. Snow-covered roads and limited visibility may affect I-64 between Hampton Roads and Williamsburg, as well as bridges and coastal routes.
Confidence is described as moderate to high for heavy, wet snow in watch areas. Snowfall is expected to taper from west to east Monday, though slick conditions may persist into the afternoon.
Students, commuters, and port-area workers across Hampton Roads may experience delays if heavier bands develop overnight.
Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts as the system approaches.
