Nebraska wakes up locked in a deep freeze, with breath hanging in the air and thermometers stuck near 14 degrees in Omaha. The cold bites immediately, and even a light dusting of snow later could turn untreated roads slick in a hurry.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, there is a 15 to 40 percent chance of additional light snow across far southeast Nebraska into southwest Iowa tonight. Any accumulation should remain minor, up to a dusting, but isolated slick spots are possible. Highs reach only 26 degrees today before dropping to around 11 degrees by Sunday morning.
In Omaha and Carter Lake, north northwest winds between 5 and 10 mph will keep wind chills in the single digits at times. Drivers along I-80, I-480 and Highway 75 should watch for thin patches of snow, especially on bridges and ramps late today.
Sunday turns sunny but cold, with a high near 24 degrees. Clear skies Sunday night allow temperatures to plunge to near 1 degree. That sharp drop raises flash-freeze concerns if any melting occurs during daylight hours.
Monday remains cold and quiet, with highs near 23 degrees. Then the pattern flips fast. Tuesday climbs to 46 degrees under partly sunny skies, followed by another 46 degrees Wednesday. Highs push near 49 Thursday and into the 50s by Friday.
Longer-range trends favor above-normal temperatures into late next week, hinting at early spring warmth replacing this winter grip.
