Delaware — Fog hangs low over Wilmington this morning, and damp pavement glistens as temperatures sit near 34 degrees. Calm conditions won’t last. A Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and runs through 6 p.m. Monday, signaling a significant snow event for New Castle and Kent counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, heavy snow is expected with total accumulations between 8 and 14 inches. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph. Snowfall rates may exceed 2 inches per hour at times Sunday night into Monday. Blowing and drifting snow could create near-whiteout conditions, especially along I-95, Route 1 and Route 13.

Rain may mix in briefly early Sunday as highs reach the upper 30s. Colder air quickly takes over by evening, changing precipitation to all snow. Conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly after sunset Sunday. The Monday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted.

Plan ahead now. Stock vehicles with water and blankets. Keep phones charged. If travel is necessary, allow extra time and monitor road conditions by dialing 511. Gusty winds may bring down tree branches and isolated power lines.

Snow tapers late Monday with clearing skies Tuesday and highs near 33. Midweek turns partly sunny and slightly milder, reaching the low 40s by Wednesday. Longer-range trends point toward moderating temperatures and hints of spring warmth late next week.

Flash freezing remains a concern as melting snow refreezes after sunset. Watch for slick spots on bridges and untreated roads.
